From the President…
Welcome Back! We’re glad to see everyone after a couple of months layoff. During this break, your club leadership
has been actively working to plan the coming two years. Goals were set, committees formed and
plans begun. Subsequently, committees
have been meeting and setting goals. We are excited about the plans we have o share with you on the 5th.
Thank you all for the enthusiasm you have
brought to the committee meetings. Your participation has been incredible and your ideas have been
wonderful. I can’t wait to see it all
come to pass!
Be making your plans now to bring you family,
friends, and neighbors to the 4th annual Empowerment Walk. This advocacy event kicks off the Purple
Ribbon Campaign during Domestic Violence Awareness month on October. So get geared up – our strength is in our
numbers so we need EVERYONE there. It’s a well-spent hour of your time – to help spread the word in our
community that we do not tolerate domestic violence and work toward its
eradication. Be at the Farmer’s
Market,
8:30 a.m.
on September 30th. Registration forms are included further in the newsletter.
In the meantime, get those purple ribbons out
and tie them to your tree, your car, your house, and hand them high and
proud. Let our goal be to PAINT THE
TOWN PURPLE in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You bet we want everyone asking us about
our purple ribbons – what a great chance to tell them about the Purple Ribbon
Campaign. Further, get them to sign a
petition supporting the eradication of domestic violence. Resolutions are included further in the
newsletter.
Can’t wait to see you on the 5th! Gwen
Hopkins, President

Organization, Membership & Classification
Committee…
We are pleased to announced the following newest
members:
Kay Pangle, sponsored by Kay Green
Kelly Gaunce, sponsored
by Elisabeth Dunbar
Christine Scivally, sponsored by Tinker Parker
We will induct them into the Zonta Club of
Kankakee
at
our next meeting,
September

. Please join us and their sponsors in welcoming them into our
organization.
Welcome!!
|
These are the subcommittees and their
chairpersons:
Co-Chair – OPEN – Any Volunteers???
Tickets – Sue Legris
Sponsorships – Char Sims
Raffle Baskets – Robin Savage
Facility/Set-Up – Elizabeth Lamie
Publicity – Tinker Parker/Anita Schluter
Wine – Laura Snyder
Food/Programs – Bernadette Henriott
Order Room – Sylvia Thomas
Please be thinking of which committee you might
like to help out with before the September meeting. This year we are adding sponsorships for
our Raffle Baskets in addition to the Table Sponsors. This means we need to find 10-12 more
sponsors than last year, so if your business, or one that you know of, would
like to be a sponsor (the fee is $50), please bring the contact information
to the meeting and give it to Char Sims. We also still need some baskets if anyone has larger size baskets
lying around and would like to donate them for a good cause.
Taste Tickets will be available at the September
meeting. This year we are encouraging
everyone to pay the $80 for their 10 tickets as early as possible. Everyone that has paid Sue Legris for their
tickets by the beginning of the October meeting will be entered into a
drawing for a basket to be given away at that meeting. Plan ahead and bring your checkbook to the
September meeting – the basket will be great! Please feel free to contact me with any
questions or comments any time.

International Taste
Committee Report…
The Taste is just around the corner and the
plans are underway. I really appreciate
all of the members who volunteered to be on our committee and look forward to
working with you all. I would
encourage anyone’s input (committee member or not) for ideas to make this
year’s International Taste as successful as the past ones and even more
so. If all of the committee members
would stay after our September meeting for a brief brainstorming session, I
would like to assign volunteers to the subcommittees and talk about some
ideas to improve this year’s Taste (table set-up, traffic flow around the
tables, etc.)

Ad Hoc Service Project Committee Report…
Thank you to you all for your serious consideration of
the service projects presented to you at the June meeting. From the balloting that you did, our
service projects for the 2006-2008 biennium are Harbor House and
KC-CASA. We will provide financial,
as well as volunteer support to these two organizations over this next two
years.
However, your interest in the projects at
Options CIL and the Azzarelli Outreach Clinic were apparent. Throughout these two years, we will keep
you posted on volunteer opportunities and activities for these two
organizations as well.
Thank you to the committee: Sandy Donley, Cheryl Trudeau, Elisabeth
Dunbar, and Gwen Hopkins

Congratulations!!
To Joy Hanson on her retirement from
National City Investments!
Best Wishes…..
…for a speedy recovery to Doris Williamson as
she and her new knee heal.
…to Jayne Kleist…We regret that Jayne
will no longer be a Zontian in our club. She has moved from the area. We wish her well as she ventures into this new chapter in her life.
Thanks….
…as Jayne Kleist was no longer able to serve as
assistant treasurer, Rhonda Thomas has stepped up to the plate and
agreed to serve in that capacity for the next two years. Thank you, Rhonda, for answering the
call!!

THE PURPLE RIBBON
CAMPAIGN
OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
AWARENESS MONTH
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS the American Medical Association now estimates that almost 4
million women are victims of severe assaults by boyfriends and husbands each
year and about one in four women is likely to be abused by a partner in her
lifetime;
WHEREAS each year, women are the victims of more than 4.5 million
violent crimes;
WHEREAS in 29% of the violent crimes against women by
lone offenders, the perpetrators were intimates – husbands or boyfriends, or
former husbands or boyfriends;
WHEREAS each day, more than three women in the
United
States
are murdered by a male
intimate partner;
WHEREAS 75% of the women who are killed by an abusive
partner are killed after they leave or when they are attempting to leave the
abusive relationship;
WHEREAS in 1992, a congressional report indicated that
the most dangerous place in the
U.S.
for a woman to be is in her home. Former
Surgeon General Antonia Novello has labeled domestic violence an epidemic;
WHEREAS Harbor House, which offers services to victims of domestic
violence, and Zonta Club of Kankakee, a service club dedicated to advancing the
status of women, are promoting The Purple Ribbon Campaign to create awareness
of the devastating effects of violence against women and children in the United
States and to encourage support of agencies and shelters dealing with this
crisis;
WHEREAS Harbor House and Zonta Club of Kankakee are
dedicated to the eradication of violence against women and children, having
implemented distributing and wearing purple ribbons during the month of October
to bring awareness to this issue;
BE IT RESOLVED THEREFORE that
______________________________________________ supports The Purple Ribbon
Campaign in recognition of violence against women and children and encourages

At least one out every three women around the
world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime -
with the
abuser being someone known to her. Violence against women and children is a
universal and local problem of epidemic proportions. Perhaps the most evasive human rights violation that we know today, it
devastates lives, fractures communities and stalls development.
Statistics paint a horrifying picture of the
social consequences of violence against women and children. It is estimated
that violence against women is as serious a cause of death as cancer, and more
women die from violent assaults than from traffic accidents.
Violence against women and children is a despicable form
of discrimination that must be eradicated!
(Detach and return this portion)
Yes!
I want to participate in the Empowerment Walk to help in the eradication of
this serious injustice against women and children.
